Thaddeus wound his way around Falls Church Circle on Tuesday evening, his workday as brutal as the Langley traffic was heavy. Working on Charise’s project proved torturous to say the least. Yet he surmised that jumping in with both feet offered his best option in order to get it done as quickly as possible and move on.

Motivation at its finest.

Brake lights ahead ground the traffic to a halt a mere fifteen minutes from home. Between exits, there was nothing he could do but wait.

His ringing phone sounded through the speakers, followed by an electronic voice. “Charise calling.”

If he ignored her call, it would only delay the inevitable. He touched his Bluetooth to answer it.

“What’s up, Charise?”

“Hey, Hans. I forgot to ask you today—are you going to Single Focus tomorrow night? We’d like to select a group to be a part of this year’s Easter presentation. You played such a key role last year I figured you might be interested again this year. I could arrange for you to be selected for the best part.”

Was he not old enough to make decisions like this for himself? Let alone qualify on his own accord? Besides, he’d made a decision after last week’s gala that would remove him from the list, once and for all. Until now, there was no opportune time to follow through with it. Ultimately, he needed something more. He needed to find a church home that matched his conviction.

He inched forward in traffic.

“Charise, I’m really not interested in being a part of it for multiple reasons. Number one, I’m too busy. And two, I simply don’t want to. In fact, I made a personal decision to find something else that fits me a little better. I hope you understand.”

“My goodness, whatever do you mean? I thought you liked it there. Where do you plan to attend?” Charise sounded surprised.

“I’m not sure yet. And there are lots of reasons, so please, don’t take it personally, but suffice it to say I’m moving into another direction in my life, and I hope you’ll respect that fact.”

“Well, yes. Of course, I respect your decision. This means you’re pulling out of the softball team, the range club, and everything?”

“Everything.”

He detected her sigh over the phone. “Well, that sucks. I always enjoyed catching up with you at those events. I mean, Cross Circle Fellowship is the place to be, as churches go. Maybe you can play on another church team and we’ll still meet up at the games. Whatever your reasons, I hope this is something you won’t later regret.”

“I won’t. This is what I need to do.” Something about voicing it to her offered him a sense of relief. He was tired of pretense—in people, in churches, across the board. He wanted the real thing. On all fronts. Sure, there was good and bad in most churches. Still, he needed to move with the cloud when prompted to do so.

“Is it me?” Charise asked. “I thought we had something together.”

How could he answer that? He may as well plunge ahead.
